P.C.C.M. 48C Early Morning at Elkhart

Greetings and welcome to the Coast to Coast travels of P.C.C.M. 48. We find our train in the early morning at the Penn Central Yard at Elkhart, Indiana. The train has traveled from LA Taylor Yard on John Bruce's layout. Transferred to the Penn Central at East St.Louis. It has now arrived in Elkhart for transfer to destinations along the Penn Central.

Let's look at the motive power that was added at East St.Louis when the train was transferred to the Penn Central. We have a PC GP40 that is in a Pool Power agreement with the Cotton Belt and SP.

Some elderly Southern Pacific F7A and B units. The SP and Cotton Belt are running a little short on power and are using a variety of different units to get their freight trains moved across the system.

Some of the deliveries headed East include this Western Pacific car loaded with bulk sugar for the Hostess plant in Empire City. It was sent from Paper Box, California.

This Northern Pacific Mechanical Reefer is bound for Rock Ridge on Neal's A.P.R.R. layout.

We have a PFE mechanical reefer loaded full of produce for Empire Produce on the N.Y.C.T.L. and a BRMX reefer with meat products going to Ralph's Grocery Warehouse in Empire City.

Some motive power headed East with the train from Elkhart. This Penn Central FP7A #4362

A former Pennsy GP35, now painted as Penn Central #2277, waits to be dispatched.

Another former Pennsy unit, SD35 #6002 taking a break from helper duties on the Horseshoe Curve.

A pair of Santa Fe ice bunker reefers loaded with produce from Texas. Heading to Eastern Markets.

And a pair of PFE reefers making deliveries to produce markets along the East Coast. The Produce Brokers are buying the produce shipments on the run while the cars are in transit.

This concludes P.C.C.M. 48C, next stop on the way is Neal's A.P.R.R. for P.C.C.M. 48D. Thanks for reading!

Acknowledge dispatch of train from Elkart east towards Rock Ridge Yard with freight cars for Terminal Yard and produce loads up for sale.

    Terminal Yard out...

Way to go Brian!!! No oil puddles gathering under the Elkhart motive power! The produce brokers in Empire City are bidding on some of the car loads as we speak! Very well done!

    1. Thank you Sir John!!! It was fun adding the produce business in the mix. It will be fun to see where some of it ends up. I found a webpage with several different shots from Elkhart during the PC era. They had units from the Santa Fe, CN, CNW, Milwaukee Road during the same time frame. I’ll try to get some links to them.
