P.C.C.M 50E, Reefers for Selkirk

Welcome to the Coast to Coast edition of P.C.C.M 50 E! So far our travels have taken us from New York, California, Colorado, Illinois and now Elkhart, Indiana. With the different Pool Power arrangements the Penn Central had made with other railroads, Elkhart had power show up from all over North America. P.C.C.M. 50 is no exception. Both blocks of cars from Galesburg will be added to train NY-4, with a final destination of Perlman Yard in Selkirk, NY.

Here we see Penn Central F7A #1844 leading a Pool Power train from Galesburg, Illinois.

Normally the Pool Power trains would run 2nd Generation high horsepower locomotives. The Yardmaster at Galesburg is a fan of the vintage style of the Cab Units from the 1st Generation. The railfans in Elkhart are in for a treat.

Not as glamorous as the U50C we saw in P.C.C.M. 50C, Union Pacific F-7B #1467B still adds a nice touch of color to the mixed train. It will soon be headed West to Galesburg and Omaha on the next Pool train.

Next in line, we have Burlington F-7B #169B added to the train in Galesburg, Illinois.

Bringing up the rear of our power lash up is Burlington F-7A #169A. Elkhart is a railfan paradise!

Some of the cars from the second block added to our train in Galesburg. CB&Q 23266 is loaded with paper products.

Great Northern #39699 is loaded full of finished wood products from the Pacific Northwest.

A classic Southern Railroad gondola returning empty, after delivering a load of pulpwood products.

Here we have a Norfolk & Western hopper returning empty, after delivering a load of limestone.

Another New Haven boxcar returning to its home rails. For a small railroad, New Haven rolling stock could be seen across the entire United States.

For the hungry residents on the East Coast, we have a Santa Fe reefer full of "Rocky Ford" melons freshly picked in La Junta, Colorado. The produce brokers are ready to deliver it to market.

Here we have a BREX reefer loaded full of Palisade Peaches, freshly picked from Western Colorado.

A reefer full of "meat products" from Morrell Meats. Ready for delivery to Eastern Markets.

A Swift reefer from Denver's Meat Packing row in Globeville, Colorado.

A venerable Athearn "Yellow Box" Swift Reefer with real metal working doors. From the 1950's?

Direct from the Omaha Stockyards, a Union Pacific Stockcar for Eastern Markets.

Another UP stockcar loaded with livestock from the High Plains of Nebraska.

Next up, a Northern Pacific "Pig Palace" stockcar. I actually saw these cars in service up to the 1980's

A nod to P.C.C.M. 50C, a Southern Pacific stockcar all the way from the West Coast. Thanks for reading! Stay tuned for the second series of the coast to coast P.C.C.M 50, with departures from Perlman Yard in Selkirk, NY.

    1. Thank you John!!! I think the railfans across the whole PCCM50 route got a nice treat with the power and trains that were running. The folks in Empire City are definitely going to be busy sorting out and delivering the cars from NY-4!

Talk about a coast to coast mix! Great job on 50E with all of the mixed freight and PC thrown in along with some CB&Q & UP power. A potpourri of railroads!

    1. Thank you Neal!!! It’s been fun watching the series unfold. Having a bunch of guys across the country running virtual trains to each other, really makes for a fun time. Glad to see the APRR back in service as well!
